The official opposition in the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality says while it welcomes the resignation of controversial ANC councillor, Andile Lungisa, it’s waiting to see if the ANC would take him to task.
Lungisa confirmed on social media that he had stepped down from his position as a member of the mayoral committee in the metro.
In an agreement with the ANC, he will, however, remain an ordinary councillor pending the Supreme Court of Appeal’s decision in his criminal case.
Lungisa was in April 2018 found guilty of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, a judgment he wants to be reversed.
Magistrate Morne Cannon found he had intentionally smashed a glass jug over the head of former mayoral committee member for transport Rano Kayser during a chaotic council meeting in October 2016.
DA Eastern Cape leader Nqaba Bhanga says it’s now up to the ANC to take action against Lungisa.
Bhanga says it was the ANC that had allowed Lungisa to run amok, to lead what Bhanga says, a group of “rogue elements” in the metro.
Lungisa was a member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for the Department of Infrastructure and Engineering.
