Andile Lungisa released from North End prison on parole

The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that former Nelson Mandela Bay ANC Councillor Andile Lungisa has been placed on parole with immediate effect.

Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says that classified as a first time offender with a positive support system, and having responded positively to rehabilitation programmes, parole placement for Lungisa is in line with the Correctional Services Act.

Lungisa was initially admitted on the 9th of May 2018 to serve a two-year jail sentence for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

This followed the infamous Council brawl of 2016 in which he smashed a glass jug over DA Councillor Rayno Kayser’s head.

Lungisa was released on bail on the 25th of May 2018 and after his appeal application was unsuccessful, he was incarcerated at PE’s North End prison on the 17th of September this year.

The Special Remission of Sentences granted by President Cyril Ramaphosa on the 16h of December 2019 reduced Lungisa’s sentence by twelve months.

Nxumalo said this parole placement means that Lungisa will serve the remainder of his sentence in the system of Community Corrections.
