ANC welcomes roll-out of NHI in EC

The ANC in the Eastern Cape has welcomed the roll-out of the National Health Insurance Scheme in the province.

The roll-out in the OR Tambo District Municipality, one of 10 pilot sites, begins on April 1.

ANC provincial secretary, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, has called on all stakeholders to ensure that the pilot programme is a success.

He says the success of the NHI will be reflected in the health of the people and in the ability of the public health sector to fight the burden of disease.

"We are excited that this NHI is piloted now, following a lengthy preparation process, which was started under the leadership of President Jacob Zuma," Qoboshiyane said.

"We are glad that his commitment to the needs of our people, especially those who need quality health care but can't afford it, has inspired the processes of the NHI to this level and we hope that all our people will ensure it succeeds," he added.

He said "our people must work with both the national and provincial departments of Health on this, and all incidents not satisfactory to the people must be reported to the Departments and the Presidential Hotline."
