The ANC says it has started a probe into who was behind an attempted attack on its Western Cape chairperson, Marius Fransman, at a meeting in Oudtshoorn.
About 50 people tried to attack Fransman on Tuesday night but he was not injured.
ANC southern Cape secretary, Putco Mapitiza, says an internal probe will be conducted.
Fransman had gone to Oudtshoorn to answer questions about the town's mayor Gordon April who was replaced by Charlie Wagenaar, when the incident happened.
Four people, including Die Son journalist Hein Coetzee were arrested in the ensuing fracas.
Coetzee was apparently assaulted and his camera and cellphone seized.
The SA National Editors' Forum has condemned Coetzee's arrest.
