ANC NMB councillors granted bail following Council brawl

Two ANC councillors in Nelson Mandela Bay appeared in court Monday following last week’s brawl in Council in which a shot was fired, a DA councillor assaulted with a water bottle and another DA councillor stabbed.

A female ANC councillor was also stretchered away following the fracas.

ANC councillor, Andile Lungisa (39) and Gamaliheli Mqaula, were granted bail of R1000 each and the matter postponed to 17 January, 2017.

They have since laid counter charges of assault.

Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said the two ANC councillors “handed themselves over to police” on Monday.

“It is alleged that Rano Kayser was assaulted during a meeting in the chambers. He was assaulted with a glass water jug on the head and received treatment for the injuries,” said Janse Van Rensburg.

“A case of assault with the intent to cause grievance body harm was opened at Humewood Police station. Andile Lungisa reported on Monday, 31 October 2016 to Humewood Police Station where he was arrested, charged and taken to court.  A counter charge of assault was also opened by Lungisa,” said Janse Van Rensburg.

“During the same incident another assault case was opened after (DA chief whip) Werner Senekal was stabbed in the back outside the chambers.”

“Gamalihleli Maqula (28) also handed himself over Monday morning, 31 October 2016 at Humewood Police Station and was also arrested, charged and taken to court,” she said.

ANC Chief whip Litho Suka told the media the ANC would be laying its own charge against the DA after a security guard in council fired a warning shot into the ceiling during the chaos.
