ANC MP and top NMB official back in court on drunk driving charges

PORT ELIZABETH, May 31 (ANA) – A member of Parliament and a senior municipal official are expected back in the Port Elizabeth magistrate’s court on Tuesday on charges of drunk driving.

African National Congress (ANC) member of parliament, Mlungsi Johnson, and Nelson Mandela Bay economic development executive director, Anele Qaba, were arrested for allegedly driving while over the legal alcohol limit.

The pair were arrested after they crashed into each other in Allister Miller Drive in Forest Hill earlier in March.

According to the charge sheet, Johnson and Qaba face charges which include driving under the influence of liquor and excessive amount of alcohol in blood.

Johnson, who was driving a grey Mercedes-Benz, also faces an additional charge of reckless and negligent driving.

The charge sheet indicated that he was allegedly “driving in the lane of oncoming traffic hereby causing an accident”.

The case was previously postponed for blood test results.

Both men are out on bail of R1,000 each.
