ANC in Nelson Mandela Bay region pays tribute to Chris Hani

The ANC in Nelson Mandela Bay region has paid tribute to slain SACP leader, Chris Hani.

This, as the country marks the 24th anniversary of his assassination outside his Boksburg home by right-wingers, the late Clive Derb-Lewis and Polish immigrant, Jasuz Walusz, who is still in jail.

Earlier, on Monday President Jacob Zuma laid a wreath at Hani's grave-site.

Meanwhile, the ANC in the Metro said Hani would not have refused to be quiet when certain leaders of the movement used public platforms to attack each other.

Regional spokesperson, Gift Nqondi, said "Hani would have been deeply saddened at the constant infighting within the ANC, where you see people heckling when other leaders are speaking on public platforms".

Nqondi's comments come a day after ANC Youth League members disrupted a memorial service in Durban on Sunday for late ANC stalwart, Ahmed Kathrada.

"In remembering Chris Hani's brutal assassination we call on the working class and poor of our country to defend Chris Hani's legacy and ideas.  To us, Comrade Chris Hani remains the best symbol of our country for a better South Africa which is free from corruption, patronage, poverty, hunger, disease and exploitation," Nqondi said.

He said had Hani not been killed, he was going to an ardent champion for the implementation of the Freedom Charter in its totality to respond to the persisting challenges of poverty, escalating unemployment crisis and deepening income inequalities faced by the working class and the poor of our country.
