The ANC in the Eastern Cape has called on families, communities and traditional leaders to be extra vigilant, as hordes of young boys throughout the province are drafted into the traditional initiation season.
ANC Provincial Secretary, Lubabalo Mabuyane says in previous seasons, a number of boys fell victim to scams of chancers, with some dying at initiation schools - while others had their genitals amputated due to unsafe circumcision by unskilled people.
He says government has made progress in a concerted effort to fight illegal circumcision.
Mabuyane says they welcome steps taken by the National Director of Public Prosecutions to legally pursue those implicated in the deaths, injuries and amputations of initiates.
