ANC councillor bust for fraud and corruption in Nelson Mandela Bay

An ANC councillor from Ward 20 in Nelson Mandela Bay has been arrested for fraud and corruption.

Forty-one-year-old Kwazakhele councillor, Bongo Nombiba, made a brief appearance in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court on Monday.

He was arrested by members of the Hawks for allegedly claiming a portion of the money that he had allegedly secured from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality as a donation on behalf of a Kwazakhele-based Non-Governmental Organisation.

Hawks Eastern Cape spokesperson, Captain Anelisa Feni, said the matter dates back to 2014.

She said the case against Nombiba was postponed today to the 26th of January and he was released on warning.

"He allegedly assisted an NGO to acquire a donation from the Municipality.  The Municipality deposited that amount into the NGO's bank account and then he went to the NGO and said that a portion of the amount was his money which was allegedly not true," said Feni.

She said that was money that had been donated to the NGO.

Nelson Mandela Bay Speaker, Jonathan Lawack, said he was saddened by the fact that "one of my councillors was taken in today."

"But, we respect the law of the country.  Any councillor who is implicated in fraud, corruption or theft must face the full wrath of the law," said Lawack.
