ANC councillor Andile Lungisa sent to prison for assault

ANC councillor, Andile Lungisa, has been sentenced to two years direct imprisonment for assaulting DA councillor, Rano Kayser, with a glass jug during the infamous Council brawl of 2016.

He was taken into custody shortly after sentence was passed but is set to apply for leave to appeal on Wednesday afternoon.

In earlier testimony to the Magistrate's Court, Kayser said doctors had told him he was lucky to be alive.

He said besides suffering physical injuries and side-effects, including memory loss and constant headaches, he felt humiliated by the situation.

Kayser told Magistrate Morne Cannon, that even his children were teased following the incident.

Lungisa also testified in mitigation of sentence, telling the court that he sympathised with Kayser.

However, the ANC councillor said that he was remorseful that Kasyer was injured during the heated Council meeting, but did not admit intentionally smashing a glass jug over Kayser's head.

Lungisa is the second ANC councillor in Nelson Mandela Bay to be jailed in the past month.

Ward 20 councillor Bongo Nombiba was sentenced in April to five years in jail following his conviction for fraud and money laundering in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court.

Nombiba was, however, acquitted of two other charges of corruption after he was arrested by the Hawks in 2016 for fleecing Municipal funds meant for a township NGO.
