Amathole District residents in the dark following vandalism of Eskom infrastructure

File

Eskom Distribution in the Eastern Cape says it is aware that some customers in the Amathole District Municipality are without electricity due to criminal acts of large-scale vandalism.

It says technicians are on the ground attending to the fault, however restoration time might be delayed due to the extent of damage to its infrastructure.

Areas most affected by the theft and vandalism include Chintsa East and Kwelera.

Eskom's General Manager in the Cape Coastal Cluster, Mbulelo Yedwa says they continue to advocate for the protection of their infrastructure in communities in order to improve network reliability and overall safety of customers and the environment.

He says vandalised and damaged infrastructure is compromised, known to overload the network and cause frequent outages.

Yedwa says this results in an increase in the frequency of faults and decreased continuity of electricity supply.

Eskom condemns electricity theft and infrastructure vandalism in its various forms and encourages communities and individuals to report illegal connections, vandalism, and unsafe behaviors to the South African Police Service or call 0800112722, SMS 31090 or WhatsApp 081 3333323.
