The man accused of the brutal murder of Fort Hare University student, Nosicelo Mtebeni, made his second court appearance in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The National Prosecuting Authority said the case against 25-year-old Alutha Pasile was postponed to 28 September.

NPA spokesperson, Anelisa Ngcakani, said he earlier declined to apply for bail.

Pasile was arrested on 19 August after police discovered the dismembered remains of the 23-year-old final-year law student in a suitcase and in a plastic bag on a pavement in Quigney.

Subsequent police investigations led to the place in Quigney which Pasile shared with Mtebeni and he was arrested for her murder.

Meanwhile, a group of students and members of various civil society organisations gathered outside the court to show solidarity with Mtebeni’s family and friends.

Equal Education's Eastern Cape organiser, Itumeleng Mothlabane, said Pasile’s decision to not apply for bail was no surprise.

“We knew that it would be an option because he knows that the community is angry at what he did, so the best way to protect himself would be to not ask for bail.  But, we will continue to go to court until his sentencing," she said.
