A 43-year-old man has appeared briefly in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court for the premeditated murder of his wife.
Yibanathi MacGyver Ndema was also charged with defeating the ends of justice at Wednesday’s court appearance for reporting his wife as missing more than two years ago.
The search for 34-year-old caregiver Noluvuyo Ndema-Nonkwelo ended in tragedy this week when her remains were discovered buried underneath a bathtub in her home at Dutywa.
Ndema-Nonkwelo, who was employed by the Eastern Cape Department of Health as an HIV & AIDS lay counsellor, was reported missing by Ndema on the 3rd of July 2019.
A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority Luxolo Tyali says it is alleged that Ndema killed his wife two days prior to reporting her missing.
According to police, a family member became suspicious when they saw the family bathtub no longer mounted on the floor.
The person made contact with police which led to the grim discovery.
Ndema indicated in court that he wanted to apply for bail and requested assistance from Legal Aid.
The matter was postponed to the 10th of September with the State indicating that it would oppose bail.
