The body of a man was recovered on Tuesday morning at the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMB) Driftsands Wastewater Treatment Works in Forrest Hill.

This comes after the City’s Security Officers chased after two men on Monday night who had entered the Municipal facility illegally.

The NMB Municipality says in a statement that the two men were suspected of theft and vandalism.

During the chase, one of the men reportedly jumped into a wastewater reactor while the other managed to escape.

The incident was reported to the police who dispatched a team to the scene, however, the man was not found.

On Tuesday a follow-up search and rescue operation confirmed a case of drowning when the body was discovered.

The name of the deceased is not known.

A criminal case was opened with SAPS in Humewood.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says a case of housebreaking was also opened on Tuesday morning.

She says upon further investigation it was established that six circuit breakers to the value of R1000 were stolen.
