Alleged serial rapist who lured victims via Facebook, nabbed in EC

A 32-year-old man who is believed to have raped several women was arrested in Komani this week and appeared in court on Thursday.

Spokesperson Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana says the man allegedly lured his victims via social media where he promised to give them modelling jobs.

A teenager opened up a rape case on Monday after she was allegedly raped by the suspect in Warner Street.

Brigadier Kinana says the teenager saw an advert on Facebook for wannabe models where a photoshoot was offered for women who were interested in modelling.

He says the victim arrived for her photoshoot, alone, on Monday afternoon.

She told police when other models left she stayed behind and that is when the alleged rape took place.

The victim did not know the name of the suspect but was able to identify him.

Brig Kinana says upon further investigation it was discovered that the suspect had several Facebook accounts and was a regular traveller to places all over the country.

He says in all the different towns the suspect used the same modus operandi to get young girls, via Facebook, to show up for photo shoots to rape them.
Police managed to get his real identity and saw that several rape cases were pending against him.

Police intercepted the suspect while travelling from Mthatha to King Williams Town.

The 32-year-old had a false doctors note which gave him "permission" to travel around during lockdown.

He also had a laptop, camera, memory cars and a cellphone, which was confiscated by SAPS.

A case of fraud and contravention of Covid-19 was opened after he was arrested at Kei Bridge.

He was subsequently detained in Komani.

Brigadier Kinana says there must be more women who fell victim to this scam and urged them to come forward and open a case with SAPS.

Anyone with information about the suspect or want to come forward with information can contact the Investigating Officer Sgt Vizicelo Ludidi-071 352 5252.
