An off-duty policeman has shot and wounded a man who had allegedly robbed a woman of her handbag in Algoa Park, Port Elizabeth.
Police spokesperson, Captain Johan Rheeder, says the off-duty policeman saw the incident happened while driving in his private vehicle late on Friday afternoon.
He says the policeman followed the suspect, and later confronted him in Gelvendale.
Rheeder says the policeman instructed the robber to lie on the ground, but an altercation ensued, during which two shots were fired, wounding the suspect in the buttocks.
He is under police guard in hospital.
Police are investigating cases of armed robbery and attempted murder.
