One person has been killed following a violent protest along the Rocklands Road outside Kariega.

Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge says a group of unknown people barricaded the road passing Gunguluza, shortly before 5 am on Thursday.

He says the protesters were busy uprooting a concrete lamp post to be used to barricade the road when it fell over and struck a man on the head.

Thirty-eight-year-old Nkosinathi Lukas, a local from the area, died on the scene.

Captain Beetge says a passenger bus and two bakkies were also set alight in what is believed to be a service delivery protest.

No arrests have been made and an inquest docket was opened into the death of Lukas.
