Alleged Mossel Bay child pornographer's bail application postponed

Mossel Bay Advertiser

The investigating officer in the case against a 25-year-old man from Mossel Bay, who is accused of possession of child pornography, still has to work through more than 1.2 million images that were found on eight devices.

These include cell phones, laptop computers and memory sticks that were found in the suspect's house in Da Nova.

The suspect was arrested in a joint operation by the police's Serial and Electronic Crime Unit and the US Department of Homeland Security.

The investigating officer, Captain Franco Bestbier testified on Friday in the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court that the suspect was arrested on the 2 February after Homeland Security analyzed his cellphone and found at least 48 images of child pornography on the device.

The eight other devices still need to be tagged.

Bestbier said the state was opposing bail because they would not be able to monitor the suspect's movements if he was released.

He said the minimum sentence is five years in prison for each charge against the suspect, and that he currently faced 48 charges, adding that he might want to flee and was therefore a flight risk.

The case has been postponed until 13 March and the suspect remains in custody.
