Three suspects police say are linked to taxi-related murders in East London have been arrested by a special task team assigned to prevent, combat, and investigate serious and violent crime in the Eastern Cape.
National police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, said the murders were believed to have taken place between November 2023 and August 2024 in which two taxi owners, a taxi driver, and a member of a taxi association were gunned down.
“Two of the suspects were arrested at the Mall of Africa in Midrand, Johannesburg on Friday, 08 November 2024, while another one was arrested in East London on Saturday, 09 November 2024,” she said.
Mathe added that four other suspects seen in a video circulating on social media, were taken for questioning.
She said police seized four pistols and an AK47 rifle from the suspects.
The firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in any serious and violent crimes.
