Alleged hijacker shot dead by Bay police

An alleged hijacker was shot dead, and two others arrested following an incident in New Brighton in Gqeberha on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa says the men allegedly hijacked a stationary silver Opel Corsa.

She says two armed men approached the vehicle, but the occupant managed to escape unharmed and opened a case with SAPS.

Mawisa says details of the car were circulated on all Police communication channels, and three hours later, the car was spotted, still in New Brighton.

She says police cornered the vehicle while one officer tactically approached the suspects.

One man pointed an unlicensed firearm at the officer who shot him dead.

His two accomplices were arrested and are expected to appear in court this week.

An inquest docket was opened and will be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

A case of possession of suspected stolen property with an additional charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition was also opened for further investigation.
