Alleged gang member in the dock for Helenvale shooting

The murder trial against an alleged member of the New Kids gang got underway in the Gqeberha High Court on Monday.

Claudio Calvert, 22, is accused of killing Cameron Rayston Daniels on 15 July 2022 in Baatjies Street, in Helenvale.

According to the charge sheet, Daniels was walking from Leith Street into Baatjies Street, close to the Helenvale Resource Centre at 09:00.

Calvert is said to have been in the company of another unknown male when they allegedly approached Daniels.

The state alleges that Calvert pulled out a firearm and shot Daniels, who died at the scene.

When the trial started, Calvert pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder and the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

It will be the version of the accused that he slept at his cousin's house on 14 July 2022.

They were all still asleep when the police came knocking at their door looking for someone called "Bradley Booysen" the following day, according to Calvert.

Calvert will contend that he went back to bed and only woke up around 10:00 and that he was nowhere near the crime scene.

On Tuesday, arrangements were made for Calvert's cousin to be brought to the High Court on Wednesday, to consult with his advocate.

The cousin in question is in custody at the St. Albans Correctional Centre.

A court orderly informed Acting Judge Hannelie Bakker that he would first need to appear in a case at the New Law Courts and he would be available to consult with Calvert's attorney thereafter.

The trial continues.
