Alleged Coffee Bay cop killers who went on crime spree - arrested

Four suspects between the ages of 22 and 37 have been arrested for the murder of police Constable Lonwabo Soga in Coffee Bay.

The 26-year-old Constable Soga was shot and killed in cold blood while seated in his police van in Coffee Bay on Tuesday.

He and his partner, 41-year-old Constable Siyabonga Nani had responded to a complaint and were approached by four men pretending to need assistance from the police.

One of the men drew a firearm, shooting and killing Soga instantly. Constable Nani was then forced to get into the back of the state vehicle with his deceased partner.

The suspects then proceeded to rob a nearby store at gunpoint and fled in the owner's Nissan Nivara which was later found abandoned on the way to Mqanduli.

Hawks Eastern Cape Spokesperson Anelisa Ngcakani says the four men were arrested in an intelligence-driven operation in the early hours of Friday morning.

The 37-year-old was arrested at Mqanduli while the rest of the suspects were arrested in Mthatha.

The team recovered six unlicensed firearms including a service pistol, handcuffs, a reflector jacket and hand radio.

All suspects will appear in the Mthatha Magistrates Court on a string of charges on Monday.
