Police in the Western Cape on Tuesday shot and killed three suspects who were allegedly involved in multiple cash in transit heists in the Eastern Cape.
Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Philani Nkwalase says a joint disciplinary team acted on information received and intercepted the suspects whilst travelling on the N1 near Paarl towards Cape Town.
The men, who were travelling in a taxi, fired shots at police who returned fire.
He says consequently police shot and killed three, wounded another two and arrested a further 11 suspects.
Nkwalase says guns were also confiscated during the arrest.
The men will be charged with attempted murder, possession of stolen goods and more charges could be added as the investigation is ongoing.
The Independent police Directorate is also investigating the death of the three robbers as it is standard procedure.
