Alleged Bay drug mule arrested at ORTIA

An alleged drug mule from Nelson Mandela Bay who recently left for Brazil to “shop for her wedding” was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport after narcotics were found in her luggage.

Hawks Gauteng spokesperson, Captain Lloyd Ramovha, said when the flight landed on Tuesday, authorities searched the luggage of the 23-year-old woman.

“A search of her luggage revealed the consignment of narcotics, which was established to be 10kg of cocaine.”

He said the “vigilant team” accompanied by customs officials and dog detectors then began to scan the surroundings for possible aides and accomplices.

“Two suspects were identified and monitored at the International Arrivals hall. They were approached and brought in for questioning at the police station.

“They stated that they were waiting for a traveler from elsewhere, but they couldn't provide proof thereof.

“It was eventually established that they were actually waiting for the arrested drug mule originating from Motherwell in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha),” he said.

Ramovha said the two accomplices are both Nigerian nationals aged 37 and 52, respectively.

“The trio is scheduled to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
