A 49-year-old Port Elizabeth man who was arrested for abducting two girls had helped community members search for the missing children last night.
The first missing girl, a 6-year-old who had been assaulted and stabbed, was found in an open plot next to the Chevrolet Stadium in New Brighton, after about four hours after the massive search began.
The brave girl was able to give police information that led them to a shack in Chris Hani township where they found her missing 5-year-old friend with whom she had been playing earlier.
The suspect will be charged with abduction, attempted murder and possibly rape, depending on the findings of the forensic investigation.
Residents from the Chris Hani township spoke of their shock at what had happened and surprised at who had been arrested for the crimes.
Some residents described him as a drunkard.
Community members demolished his shack shortly after his arrest.
