All systems go for Cosatu May Day Rally

The Congress of South African Trade Unions said it's all systems go for it's national May Day Rally which will be held in Nelson Mandela Bay on Tuesday.

Cosatu together with its alliance partners held a state of readiness media briefing at the ANC Regional offices in Port Elizabeth on Monday.

The federation's Provincial Secretary, Xolani Malamlela, said they were expecting to fill the Isaac Wolfson Stadium in New Brighton which has a capacity of 20 000.

Malamlela urged their members to come in numbers and added that they have made arrangements for SATAWU members, who have been striking for more than two weeks, to be transported to the rally.

"The target is for us is fill the stadium to capacity. So far we have been able to mobilise and we believe that stadium will be filled to capacity," he said.

Malamlela said he believed that the federation had mobilised effectively.

Malamlela said that they had heard that rival federations would also be holding May Day rallies in Nelson Mandela Bay's townships.

He said that Cosatu would consider changing their march route to avoid clashing with its rival trade union federation, Saftu.

Malamlela said they would negotiate with police.

"We are prepared to change our route and negotiate with the police," he added.

He said taking the same route might come across as though Cosatu members were provoking other trade union federations.

Cosatu President, Sidumo Dlamini, called on members to avoid fighting amongst each other and focus their energies on the enemy which he called white monopoly capital.

The federation said it expected a far different atmosphere than a year ago which saw former President, Jacob Zuma, booed off stage and the event called off in the Free State

The rally is due to be addressed by President Cyril Ramaphosa, Cosatu President, Sidumo Dlamini,  SA Communist Party General Secretary Blade Nzimande and SANCO President Richard Mdakane.
