Facebook (Makana Local Municipality Communication)?
Makhanda all but ground to a halt on Monday morning as members of local taxi associations took to the streets to protest against the current state of affairs in the Municipality.
According to a statement on social media, the associations, BATA and Uncedo, are deeply concerned about the state of roads and water supply, among other service delivery issues.
They said no progress had been made on these issues following a meeting with the Makana Municipality last year.
A memorandum is expected to be presented to the Municipality.
A spokesperson said they would issue a statement later.
Meanwhile, Eastern Cape police confirmed that the blockading of roads within Makhanda took place early on Monday morning.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, says assistance was also requested from the Provincial Traffic Department just after 7 am when taxis blocked the N2 from King Williamstown.
He says there's very little movement in town due to the protest.
Kinana says all strategic points are being monitored by operational units of the police.
A taxi driver was also arrested for reckless and or negligent driving, following a day-long protest by taxi operators.
According to police, a large crowd gathered outside the City Hall where they used stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd when the Makana Mahor tried to speak to the crowd who demanded the presence of Premier Oscar Mabuyane.
Due to the volatility of the situation, the mayor was removed from the City Hall.
