Walter Sisulu University (WSU) has urged staff members at its Mthatha Campus to stay away until the rife student protest is stabilised.
Students participating in the violent protest which according to the University remains tense have barricaded the N2 near campus on Thursday.
WSU spokesperson, Yonela Tukwayo, says some of the student's grievances include the provision of a social space where they consume alcohol on the premises.
She, however, stressed that the University policy does not allow alcohol on campus.
Tukwayo says other demands included that the University grant additional funds for book allowances and increase the number of students admissions for special cases.
She says past and present students are struggling to pay their debt and owe the University over a billion Rand- money that should be in their coffers to deliver quality services.
Tukwayo also says police are monitoring the situation and that three of the five students who were arrested when the protest started on Wednesday morning have since been released.
