Four people have been killed and four injured after the driver of a single vehicle lost control and overturned on the N6 between Stutterheim and East London.

A spokesperson for Provincial Traffic Unathi Binqose says a Ford Ranger Double cab with eight occupants was travelling in the direction of East London on Saturday afternoon when the driver lost control.

He says according to eyewitnesses the driver was reckless and speeding and believed to be under the influence.

Binqose says three men and a woman died on the scene.

He says the occupants of the car also did not have their safety belts on as their bodies were found scattered across the scene.

A case of culpable homicide is under investigation with more charges that could be added.

The driver was only slightly injured.
