Agri Eastern Cape says it has been informed of what it called 'the senseless murder' of one of its members in the early hours of Sunday morning.
It says in a statement 79-year old John Viedge, from the farm, Highlands, just outside Nqanarhu (formerly Maclear) was shot and killed in his home.
Agri Eastern Cape's Rural Safety Chairperson, Alfonso van Niekerk says they have called on the South African Police Service to implement its Rural Safety Strategy and to do more to protect the rural communities throughout the Eastern Cape and South Africa.
He says this unfortunate and unnecessary event has further highlighted the need for rural community members to own firearms for the purpose of self-defense.
