Agreement in sight with high energy users

The Nelson Mandela Municipality says an agreement with 14 high energy users in dispute with the municipality over electricity tariff increases, could be reached before the end of this month.

Chief Financial Officer Trevor Harper told the Budget and Treasury Committee this morning that he was in discussion with the 14 companies.

Harper said that he was unable to provide the committee with further information because of a “confidentiality agreement.

He told the Committee though that the as at the end of August, the companies, which are paying just 76% of their current accounts, were in arrears collectively to the tune of R156 million.

Metrominute reports that the companies, who have not been name, had disputed the electricity tariff increases approved by Council for both the 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 financial years.

Initially five companies were party to the dispute but others joined in later.
