Addo station commander has brush with death after coming under fire

File

Eastern Cape police said the Addo SAPS station commander had a narrow brush with death after coming face-to-face with an armed robbery suspect who pointed a gun at him and fired shots as the officer sped off.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the incident happened on Wednesday, when Captain Vuyo Dolosi, was stopped by some children who reported a robbery at a supermarket.

“While still obtaining information, one suspect approached his vehicle, pointed a firearm at him, and ordered him to get out.”

However, Naidu said the officer sped off, as shots were fired at him.

“He immediately went to another police officer’s house and together they searched for the suspect's vehicle, a silver Chev Captiva. The vehicle was spotted speeding out of the Nomathamsanqa location where a high-speed chase ensued.”

Naidu said the five suspects abandoned the vehicle and ran into the fruit orchards and disappeared.

Two firearms reported stolen in Kabega Park and Addo earlier this year, were found inside the vehicle, which was hijacked in the Ikamvelihle area in March.

Goods stolen during the robbery were also found in the vehicle.

Police are investigating cases of attempted murder and business robbery.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene praised Dolosi for his bravery, saying “despite coming under attack” he still pursued the suspects with the assistance of a fellow officer.

The hunt for the robbery gang is continuing.
