Activists march on health department in Bhisho

Health sector activists will march on the Eastern Cape Health Ministry in Bhisho on Friday.

That's to present a memorandum of wide-ranging demands to the Health Department.

The memorandum calls on Health MEC, Sicelo Gqobana, to fix what they say is an ailing and dysfunctional health care system in the province.

Earlier this week the health sector NGO's Section 27 and Treatment Action campaign released a damning 17-page report detailing serious challenges in the Eastern Cape Health sector.

The report was presented to Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi.

The Eastern Cape Health Department has reacted angrily to the report saying that many of the issues raised are being addressed or have already been addressed.

Meanwhile, Health MEC, Sicelo Gqobana, will not be receiving the memorandum from the Eastern Cape Crisis Action Coalition.

He will be in Nelson Mandela Bay for a sod-turning ceremony at Jose Pearson TB hospital.

The Department, supported by the Coega Development Corporation, is building a pharmacy and out-patients department services at the 230 bed TB hospital.

The Eastern Cape Health Department says this is one of the many projects that are being and will be initiated throughout the province to improve the infrastructure at hospitals and clinics.
