ActionSA in the Eastern Cape has called for individuals implicated in the Lesseyton Sports Field saga to be held accountable for the massive escalation in the cost of the project.
The party’s Chris Hani District regional chairperson, Yolanda Gcanga, said they noted the tabling of a forensic report by the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Zolile Williams, following a visit to Komani on 11 July.
Gcanga said the project was initially intended to cost R4.5 million but escalated to R20 million due to “unauthorised changes in the scope of work and price tag without proper tender processes.”

She said the forensic report commissioned by CoGTA “revealed numerous irregularities, including awarding the contract to Thalami Civils despite it ranking fourth in the bidding process.”
“Furthermore, the bid committees were improperly appointed and lacked the necessary qualifications,” she said.
Gcangac said ActionSA demanded that MEC Williams take necessary action to ensure that all individuals implicated in this matter are held accountable and that they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The party also called on the Hawks and other law enforcement agencies to expedite their investigations and ensure that the recovery of the misappropriated funds is prioritised.
“The public deserves to see decisive action taken against corruption in all spheres of government, and those responsible must be made to answer for their actions,” Gcanga said.
