Airports Company South Africa says it will work together with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to further develop the Port Elizabeth International Airport.
Airport management held a media briefing on Tuesday following a meeting with the municipality on Monday.
PE International Airport Manager, Steven Maphalla said Airport Company South Africa (ACSA) had plans to expand the airport and increase the number of passengers from 1.6 million per annum to 4 million per year in 5 to 10 years time.
Maphalla said the collaboration between the two was important as the development of the airport would also result in the growth of the local economy.
He added that the planned developments to the airport might require the acquisition of certain land owned by the municipality.
Maphalla said the short term goal of increasing passenger traffic to 4 million - then to 17 million in 20 to 25 years time - would result in local economic stimulation which would in turn create jobs.
He said that ACSA, together with the municipality and Eastern Cape Tourism would have a strategy development meeting soon.
Maphalla concluded that ordinarily that the two entities worked separately. However, they'd realised that the want the same end-goal and had thus decided to collaborate on future developments. .
