Police in Gqeberha have seized abalone with an estimated street value of over R1 million.
Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the find was made in the early hours of Tuesday morning during a joint operation by members of Gqeberha Public Order Policing and the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
She said the team had received information about divers extracting abalone from the ocean in the Seaview area.
“At about 04:00 the information was operationalised and the area and surrounding bushes was patrolled and searched,” Naidu said.
She said the team found “35 bags containing 3413 shucked units of abalone and 47 units of shelled abalone with an estimated street value of R1 008 000.”
Naidu said three bags with diving equipment were also found.
“An enquiry docket has been opened for further investigation,” she said.
