Abalone worth nearly 1m found in PE


The police's K-9 unit confiscated 2 500 units of abalone with an estimated value of R937 500 found in bushes off Marine Drive in Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth on Friday.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, members of the protection of marine life and private security stopped a suspicious looking vehicle and searched it.

Naidu said after thoroughly searching the vehicle, members found nothing suspicious nor illegal and the driver was allowed to leave.

"K9 members then combed the immediate area of where the vehicle was stopped and in nearby bushes, 15 bags of abalone was found,"  she said.

The weight of the molluscs was approximately 625kg's with a total of 2500 units.

Naidu said no arrests had been made and the confiscated abalone would be handed over to the Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries.
