Police have arrested two foreign nationals at a complex in Lorraine in Gqeberha where they seized abalone and other fish species.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the arrests were made in the early hours of Sunday morning by members of the Flying Squad who were keeping the place in Macon Road under surveillance.

She said at around 2 am a vehicle entered the complex with police following close behind.

Naidu said one man fled from the vehicle but both were arrested as they tried to enter the house.

Inside the house, police found a bag containing 382 units of dried abalone, a box with 143 units of dried abalone, and over 900 units of various fish species were found in large deep freezers.

“The total estimated value of the abalone is R66 640 and the various types of fish is R95 000.

Naidu said the Chinese nationals, aged 41 and 42, were detained on charges of contravening the Marine Resources Act and the illegal possession and transportation of abalone.

She said the two will appear in court soon.
