A G4 security guard was shot and wounded during a cash-in-transit robbery in Port Elizabeth on Thursday morning.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the incident happened after the guards had collected money at a supermarket chain store in Commercial Road.
"At about 07h50 this morning G4S security came to PicknPay in Commercial Road. As they were exiting the store they were held up by four gunmen," said Naidu.
"Shots were fired. A security guard was injured and two firearms were taken," she added.
Naidu says "three cannisters" with an undisclosed amount of money was taken by the gunmen.
"A civilian who witnessed what had happened , also fired at the fleeing robbers. The men escaped in a white Toyota Hilux bakkie," Naidu said.
Traumanet paramedics responded to the scene, according to spokesperson, Dean Slater.
He said the two guard were treated on scene and rushed to hospital in "critical but stable" condition.
