The Eastern Cape Department of Education has approved 82 teaching posts to be filled for schools in the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth.
That's the word from Democratic Alliance Shadow MEC for Education, Edmund Van Vuuren.
The DA is appealing to parents not to close schools as they believe this is to the detriment of learners.
Van Vuuren says principals can't find suitable people to fill positions at these schools and parents are not being properly informed.
He says the problem is finding teachers in Port Elizabeth to fill positions as all additional teachers have been utilised.
Van Vuuren is appealing to principals to advertise positions far and wide, beyond the city.
"Now it is not the job of the department, I am not singing the praises of the department but what I am saying is that the department has indicated that those posts have been approved so you will have to find a teacher to fill those posts. In Port Elizabeth we do not have additional teachers, principals need to advertise far and wide. They need to take that information of that specific teacher to the department and demand that the teacher be appointed if they have the documentation of that teacher." says Van Vuuren.
Parents and teachers have since closed 23 schools in the Northern Areas protesting against teachers shortages.
