53-year-old rapist sentenced to life in Port Elizabeth High Court

A 53-year-old-man was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Port High Court on Friday for raping an 11-year-old girl.

Police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge, said Wellington Mboniswa raped the now 18-year-old girl in January 2011 before she went to school in New Brighton.

Beetge said the sentencing follows a lengthy investigation and court proceedings of more than six years.

He said that the court ordered that Mboniswa's name be added to the National Register for Sexual Offenders.

"The protection of women's rights and children, and specifically where sexual offences are committed against them, is a national priority for SAPS as well as our courts," said Beetge.

"The expert investigation by the Motherwell Family Violence and Sexual Offences Unit investigators ensured that justice was served," Beetge concluded.
