Eastern Cape police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Celiwe Binta, has welcomed the arrest of 14 people for the brutal murder of three members of the same family in a village near Mbizana on Saturday.
Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Sibongile Soci, says a team of detectives sent to Lugwiji Location at Mzamba arrested a total of 14 suspects aged between 21 and 28 for the murders of 29-year-old Ayanda Nomaqhiza, his 72-yera-old father, Julius and his 65-year-old mother Patience.
The murders were apparently linked to allegations of witchcraft.
Soci said the detective team, worked tirelessly following up information which led to the arrest of the suspects from the same location, from Monday afternoon until the early hours of Tuesday morning.
"This is meeting the organisational objections of the SAPS and the expectations of the communities we serve. This must also send a strong message to criminals that we will bring to book those who choose to attack innocent victims in their homes", said Lt General Binta.
