'Crying' flamingo rescued at sea in Port Alfred

A young flamingo is currently being treated at Bayworld in Port Elizabeth after it was rescued by a marine biologist in Port Alfred on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute Craig Lambinon says the Vivian Dames is also a trainee at the NSRI and immediately called for assistance.

The bird appeared to be weak, dehydrated and was following Vivian and other fishermen, crying.

He says knowing that flamingos migrate North, mostly to Mozambique, in the Autumn, Vivian suspected that this little Flamingo had most likely been left behind during the migration period.

The NSRI Sea Rescue vehicle was dispatched who assisted Vivian in capturing the bird.

Lambinon says it took about 15 minutes for them to get him into a box following advice from the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds(SANCOB).

He says one of the crewmen has named him Flamingo Frank.

Frank, who is not yet pink in colour, was transported to Bayworld where he was treated for dehydration and placed in the care of SANCOB.

Lambinon says they believe Frank will be rehabilitated and will hopefully be released in the Spring in Swartkops when the other flamingos are expected to return from the North.
