SA finally off UK's controversial red list

The UK government says South Africa will be removed from the red list on Monday next week following deliberations between SA and UK officials.

UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced on Thursday that 47 countries would be removed from the controversial list that compels strict Covid-19 testing and quarantine rules.

This will allow vaccinated arrivals from those countries, including South Africa,  to England to bypass quarantine.

Only seven countries and territories will remain, including Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Dominican Republic, and Venezuela.

The Western Cape Government says the removal of South Africa from the United Kingdom’s ‘red list’ is great news for the Western Cape.

It says the decision brings an end to a baffling diplomatic shamble that risked the economic recovery of the tourism and hospitality sector in the Province.

South Africa will officially be removed from the list effective Monday 11 October 2021.
