Facebook on track to develop a metaverse

Facebook (FB) has taken the next step in its plan to develop what is called a metaverse.

The Company announced earlier this week that it would create 10 000 high skilled jobs in Europe over the next five years.

FB said the investment is a vote of confidence in the strength of the European tech industry and the potential of their tech talent.

What Is the Metaverse?

The metaverse is a set of virtual spaces where you can create and explore with other people who aren’t in the same physical space as you. You’ll be able to hang out with friends, work, play, learn, shop, create and more. It’s not necessarily about spending more time online. It’s about making the time you do spend online more meaningful.

The metaverse isn’t a single product one company can build alone. Just like the internet, the metaverse exists whether Facebook is there or not. And it won’t be built overnight. Many of these products will only be fully realized in the next 10-15 years. While that’s frustrating for those of us eager to dive right in, it gives us time to ask difficult questions about how they should be built.

FB said no one company will own and operate the metaverse, because, like the internet, its key feature will be its openness and interoperability.

The company says bringing the metaverse to life will take collaboration and cooperation across companies, developers, creators and policymakers. For Facebook, it will also require continued investment in product and tech talent, as well as growth across the business.
