A strong 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Japan late on Saturday, but no tsunami warning was issued.
The US Geological Survey says the epicentre was 107 km southeast of Yamoto at a depth of 54 kilometres.
According to media reports, Japanese officials said the epicentre was not far from the killer quake in 2011 which triggered a devastating tsunami and killed more than 18,000 people.
Saturday's quake produced powerful shaking in parts of Japan's eastern coast and was felt in Tokyo, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.
