Monkeypox continues to spread while thousands still die from Covid

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says monkeypox continues to spread globally with 35 000 cases reported since the outbreak resulting in 12 deaths.

Director-General of the World Health Organization Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus says the cases were reported from 92 countries.

Almost 7 500 cases were reported last week and are mainly from Europe and America.

Dr Ghebreyesus says almost all cases reported are amongst men who have sex with men.

"The primary focus for all countries must be to ensure they are ready for monkeypox and stop transmission using effective tools, incl. enhanced disease surveillance, careful contact tracing, tailored risk communication and community engagement, and risk reduction measures," he said.

The WHO also confirmed the first transmission of monkeypox from a human to a dog and said it was expected, seeing that our pets live close to us.

COVID-19

WHO says the Covid-19 virus is not tired of us as Omicron continues to be the dominant variant.

Dr Ghebreyesus says 15 000 people died from Covid in the last week - a number that is unacceptable, considering the fact that we have all the tools to fight the pandemic.

"There is a lot of talk about learning to live with the COVID19 virus, but we cannot live with 15,000 deaths a week," he said.
