A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 hit Japan today, triggering a tsunami alert on the northeast coast.
Early reports said buildings in the capital, Tokyo, also swayed violently.
The tsunami was forecast to be around one-metre high.
Initial reports put the epicenter near to that of the March 11 quake which had sparked a devastating tsunami.
The US Geological Survey says the quake was recorded at a depth of 36 kilometres and about 284 kilometres east of Honshu.
