Kenyan mall siege "in its final stages"


Heavy gunfire is still being heard on Tuesday from the Nairobi mall where Al Shebab fighters have been holed up since the weekend.

Kenyan security forces say they have the upper hand in the battle that has left more than 62 people dead and up to 200 wounded.

Capetonian, James Thomas, is among the dead which includes many foreigners.

Its also believed that that two or three Americans and a British woman were among the group of attackers who stormed the mall.

According to reports, Kenyan security forces say the operation at the mall is in its final stages with at least three attackers killed in fighting on Monday.

Meanwhile, Meanwhile, president Jacob Zuma's called on the UN to take a special resolution on the situation in Kenya.

Earlier, the South African government strongly condemned the Kenyan mall attack.

"What has happened in Kenya indicates the extent at which terrorism could go. So many innocent souls have died. Why should this be allowed," Zuma said.

"We believe that as the UN is meeting its absolutely important that we take a very firm decision and I hope that there will be a very special resolution taken."
