Novak Djokovic accepts a stamp in his honour a day after testing positive for Covid-19

The number one tennis player in the world has been trending non-stop since his arrival in Australia earlier this month.

Novak Djokovic (35) is in the country to defend his title at the Australian Open, hoping to win his 21st Grand Slam.

The player has since released a statement on his Instagram account to address what he calls misinformation.

In the statement, he admits to testing positive for Covid and for meeting with a journalist without his mask on, an act he called an error of judgment.

Djokovic had his visa cancelled upon his arrival and was detained at an immigration detention facility in Melbourne until a court ruled for him to be released.
Social media "detectives" soon discovered that the Serbian tennis star had travelled to different countries and attended several events after he tested positive for Covid-19.

A day after his positive PCR test, Djokovic attended a ceremony where he was honoured by the Serbian National Postal Service with his very own stamp.

In his statement, he made no mention of the stamp ceremony and said he only received the PCR test result after attending a children's tennis event.

The following day he also went ahead with an interview and photoshoot with French sports newspaper L'Equipe.

"I felt obliged to go ahead and conduct the L'Equipe interview as I didn't want to let the journalist down but did ensure I socially distanced and wore a mask except when my photograph was being taken," he said.
"On reflection, this was an error of judgement and I accept that I should have rescheduled this commitment," he added.

The tournament starts on Monday.
